Phuket Surfing

From May to October when the south west monsoon brings wind and waves onto Phuket’s west coast beaches surfing in Phuket becomes popular. (From November to April the sea is usually flat).  May to October is considered Phuket’s low season when hotels are cheap and beaches are uncrowded.

Popular surf beaches (south to north) are Naiharn, Kata Noi, Kata, Kalim, Surin, Bangtao and Naiyang beach.  Some of these beaches are more suitable for experienced surfers. Kalim has a shallow reef break that is treacherous, Kata Noi waves break over shallow rocks. Kata beach is one of the best beaches for beginner surfers.

For the first timers there are surf schools located on the southern end of Kata beach, they offer professional lessons and board rental. Learning the basics from an instructor is worth it. After that it’s just a case of practice.

Boards are available for rent if you are not bringing your own.

If you are in Phuket when there are no waves don’t despair. You can surf at the Surf House in either Patong beach or Kata beach.

Every July Kata beach has a surf contest.
