Promthep cape
Phuket sunset viewpoint
Promthep Cape is the most popular viewpoint in Phuket for watching the sunset. If you head up there from 1700-1900 hrs most evenings you will be there with coach loads of other tourists, all trying to get the perfect selfie. Don’t let that put you off because Promthep cape is a cool place, and the area is pretty big.
At the top of the steps there is a small lighthouse, you can go inside and have a look around. From the top you can also see over to the east coast of Phuket and Chalong bay.
There is also a Buddhist shrine full of elephant ornaments.
There are some telescopes that you can use to spy distant ships at sea. They cost 10 baht to use.
Down at the car park and across the street there are lots of souvenir shops, and mobile food carts.
Laem (cape) Promthep is just south of Naiharn beach on Phuket’s southwest coast, and just north of Rawai and Yanui beach. The coastal drive over from Kata beach is a picturesque one and can make a nice afternoon excursion if you have a hire car or scooter.
All in all Promthep cape is well worth a visit. Of course you don’t have to go up at sunset, early morning would also be good, before the heat builds.
